playwright + director’s notes
During the crazy peak of the pandemic, I found myself desperately craving a dish that only my late mother could whip up. So, like any person with questionable culinary skills, I hit the internet, watched a gazillion cooking
videos, and decided to give it a shot myself. It was like a journey into my past, a taste of nostalgia that made me think of that old saying, “If you can’t find it, make it yourself.”
Now, let’s fast forward a bit. In recent years, I’ve been diving headfirst into something I’m super passionate about—hosting workshops. And not just any workshops, but ones I sort of “created” where we chat about how
storytelling can be this incredible tool to understanding your personal journey.
This experience provides insight into the lessons, growth, and challenges that shape who you are, fostering self-awareness and guiding future choices.
Therefore, every time I wrap up a session, I catch myself thinking, “How can I share the importance of storytelling with more people?” Because, let’s face it, having a 20/20 vision about your true journey is no walk in the park.
Especially for us in the AAPI community, honestly, any marginalized community out there. It’s like we’re collectively dealing with a bit of PTSD. Our culture, our grandparents, our parents—they rarely opened up about the ‘past.’ It’s like they were trying to protect us from their harsh realities. But you know what?
Without those stories being passed along, we miss out on the chance to learn, to process, and eventually, to heal.
So, There is Always Sunshine on the Stage is similar to my attempt at that cooking adventure during the pandemic—my way of making something when it’s not easily available. It’s a shot at unraveling those stories we might not have heard, those journeys we might not fully understand.
From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank the crew and the cast for their dedication to help tell an important chapter for us.
Because, in the end, our stories are the spice of life, and everyone
deserves a taste. Let’s dive in together, shall we?
